Bill Maher Says His Next Stand-Up Special May Be His Last

Unfrosted star, writer, director & comedian Jerry Seinfeld was the latest guest on Bill Maher's Club Random Podcast this past week while promoting his new movie on Netflix. The two comics discussed each other's stand-up tenures when Maher then revealed to Seinfeld that "I'm going to stop doing it [stand-up]" in 2024.

What Bill Maher's saying about his current stand-up ambitions.

The late night host was visibly nervous to tell the "pure stand-up" this new update - he explains, "I could go back. I don't want to make a big announcement or something. I'm doing a special at the end of the year. It'll be my 13th for HBO. That's a lot."

"First of all, I put a lot of time and effort into it because, as you know, stand-up is like playing the cello. You can't just walk up there. You have to stay in practice," Maher said. "And I do. I've always loved it. I'm always working on it. But I have a show."

Seinfeld was surprised by the news when Maher was explaining how many specials he's done for the network saying, "I don't know how you kept it up during the show, or frankly, why."

Maher said he's currently excited about where he's at with is HBO show & hopes to possibly experiment with a live podcast tour and grow his Club Random Studios podcast network. The comic has been the host of Real Time With Bill Maher for over 22 seasons and is set to continue hosting the late night HBO series through 2026. His latest comedy special, #Adulting, was released on HBO in 2022.

Maher made it clear on this episode that this wasn't an official announcement about a stand-up retirement, so we'll just have to wait and see what he's hoping to do after his next stand-up special releases with HBO later this year.
