The last few seasons of South Park have shown us an episodic take to its seasons, with one episode laying down the foundation for the next. An approach creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone had not deployed for the animated series until very recently. While season 20 saw some ups and downs because of this tactic, it also provided the opportunity for some chances to be taken, something we don’t often see for a show this long in the tooth.
For the season 21 teaser, they opted to go for montage of images steamrolling through pop culture moments, celebrity, and general good times set to Cartman singing Montell Williams as they do. Maybe it’s because the nature of how the show is made, there aren’t any advance images of season 21. Or, maybe it’s meant to tell us that South Park plans to ditch the episodic takes with the new season, get away from the politics, and just make some great fart jokes. We’ll all find out (or ‘memba) when the new season premieres on Comedy Central on September 13th.
