Learning this news breaks our heart. Artie Lange was arrested in Hoboken last week for alleged possession of drugs.
Lange was picked up by the police last Sunday in the parking garage of his Hoboken complex with both cocaine, heroin, and drug paraphernalia. Police stated he had them in both his car and on his person. Officers were responding to area of 14th Street and Shipyard Lane where Lange lives after receiving reports of a person trying to enter a parked vehicle in the garage. When the police arrived they saw the suspected drugs inside the car. Lange would later approach the officers and upon confirming that it was his car, gave them probable cause to search his person where more bags of drugs were discovered.
The drugs were confiscated and the 49 year old Lange was taken to Hoboken police headquarters where he was released later on a summons for a court appearance for three charges.
Hearing this news is a total bummer because Lange has struggled with addiction nearly his entire life with stories of his drug use going all the way back to his early years on madTV, through his time on The Howard Stern Show and well-documented attempted suicide that spawned his departure. Lange has written numerous chapters in his books and jokes about his struggle with drugs in his stand-up as well.
Artie, we’re rooting for ya.
Update: Around 3pm today, Lange confirmed the story with a few tweets saying he’s a flawed person, the Hoboken police treated him with respect, and pleas for young people to not follow in his footsteps.
