Fresh off his Golden Globe wins, Donald Glover has earned yet another accolade for his latest project, Atlanta: the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Comedy Series. It also took home the award for Best New Series.
The show, a comedy that hits intense emotional depths without losing its smart humor, follows rising rapper Paper Boi (Bryan Tyree Henry) and his hustling manager / cousin (Glover), a Princeton dropout trying to translate his book smarts to the music biz.
This latest high-profile win cements Atlanta’s spot as the best comedy you’re probably not watching (to be fair, that might be because it’s currently only streaming on FX Now). It’s got a nearly unheard-of 100% positive rating on Metacritic, and recently took home Golden Globes for for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actor in a Television Series (Musical or Comedy); it’s also won big at the AFI Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, Producer’s Guild Awards, and the NAACP Image Awards – so, it’s been a pretty big year for Glover, Atlanta’s creator, writer, producer, and co-lead.
He’s come a long way from the days of playing the clown on Community and 30 Rock – and an even longer way from his childhood, outside Atlanta, in a Jehovah’s Witness household that forbade TV and forced him to explore the his own limitless creativity.
He does that in lots of ways, these days, from his acting and writing to his acclaimed music career; under the name Childish Gambino, he’s released a handful of albums, with the latest – Awaken, My Love! – dropping shortly after Atlanta’s premiere.
The second season of Atlanta won’t be out until 2018 – Glover’s taking some time off to prepare for his role as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo film, as if he didn’t have enough awesome stuff going on – so you’ve got plenty of time to catch up on the first ten episodes.
