Weekend Update Weekend Update had some high moments and some low moments. While the jokes are great between Jost and Che, the last few episodes have somewhat ground to a halt by the time the guests drop in. Dana Carvey dropping as Church Lady was fun, but did he need to be there? Nah but people aren’t going to watch his Netflix special if he doesn’t tell them. Bill Murray and members of the World Series champion Chicago Cubs continued their championship celebration by dropping by Weekend Update to sing a celebratory song, “Go Cubs Go.” It’s pretty easy to see that Murray is thoroughly enjoying the victory lap he gets to take with his beloved Cubs.
Gemma & Ricky This is a rehashing of a previous sketch where Cecily Strong singing with a British accent is the strongest moment about it. The visual of Cumberbatch trying to pull off a Criss Angel is simultaneously disturbing and funny at the same time.
Criminal Mastermind Cumberbatch gets the chance to finally play the villain. But does he always need to give them so much time to figure out his scheme? This sketch was great in concept but seemed to be missing something just slightly. You almost imagine Cumberbatch stating “Simon Says” lines from Die Hard 3.
Solange “Don’t Touch My Hair” Solange is back and don’t you lay a finger on her hair y’all!
Meeting Mr. Shaw What. A. Weird. 10-to-1 sketch. This sketch is going to take you to one of two different places 1) WTFTown where you just repeatedly ask yourself if its really happening. Or 2) you would love this sketch for the pure absurdity of it. Just depends how twisted your sense of humor is. Let’s return next week for the hotly anticipated SNL debut of Dave Chappelle with the hip-hop legends, A Tribe Called Quest.
