These days, social media has more power than ever. A simple tweet can set off a chain reaction that can result in anything from Betty White hosting Saturday Night Live to political revolution in a country like Egypt. And now, with the World Series set to feature the Cleveland Indians, the greatest sports comedy of all time heads back in the limelight. Major League may be over 25 years old, but it still holds up while boasting one of thee most memorable sports comedy character ever.
Charlie Sheen as Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn has resurfaced and for good reason. Wouldn’t it be so fitting and simply amazing to see him take the mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch when the World Series kicks off this Tuesday in Cleveland? With the potential for the Indians to wipe out a 67 year championship drought in baseball, it would be fitting to see the “Wild Thing” try and help close the book on a story about a franchise that at one point was so bad they had to make a comedy movie about it.
With the idea spreading across social media and the internet like wild fire, it prompted a response from Sheen himself:
Unfortunately however, it appears dreams have been dashed. According to Fox Sports, “a Major League Baseball source told The Associated Press that the choices for who will throw out the first pitches have already been made – and Sheen isn’t among them.” We can only guess they are going to go the traditional route and have former team legends take on the task in typical fashion. Comedy might have lost this battle, but they haven’t lost the war. Not only has Major League received another generational boost, the team opposing the Indians in the World Series, the Chicago Cubs, has a comedy film of their own. Does anyone remember Rookie of the Year starring a young Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie franchise)? TLB’s own Mark Says Hi! does because he saw it three times in the theater. Well, we may not be seeing number 99 out on the mound during the “Fall Classic”, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty of them for Halloween this year if the Indians pull off the victory.Major League
