It’s a big week for comedian Chris Gethard: his new special, Career Suicide, premieres May 6th on HBO – and he appeared on The Laugh Button Podcast to tell us all about it – and now, in a Facebook Live update delivered directly to fans, he’s announced long-awaited news on his cult hit late night series, The Chris Gethard Show.
Fans of the anything-goes variety / talk show have been waiting for months to find out if they’ll be getting another season of TCGS, which has been clouded with uncertainty more or less since its debut over eight years ago. Originally hosted live from the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in Chelsea, NYC (though sometimes, Gethard would take his audience on road trips, like to the New Jersey home where he lost his virginity), the show moved to public access station Manhattan Neighborhood Network in 2011. It lived there, attracting a massive cult fanbase of misfit kids attracted to the show’s “No Cool Kids” motto, for four years, broadcasting weekly from the Upper West Side. In 2013, the cast shot a pilot for Comedy Central that ended up going nowhere, then in 2015, TCGS finally made the move to a real network: Fusion, which aired a modified version of the show (minus, of course, many of the “live and unpredictable” elements of the public access edition) for two seasons. The last episode aired on June 1, 2016, and there’s been no news since then…
…until today. And it’s great news, too: fans won’t have to wait much longer for all-new TCGS episodes, because – in yet another network shakeup – the show’s heading back to screens, this time on truTV. The 16-episode first season will debut later this year, and there’s another big change, with the show going back to its original, live format.
Gethard made the announcement in his signature self-effacing style, saying:
“I’ve long admired truTV for their brand of honest, in your face comedy. Myself and the gang from The Chris Gethard Show are thrilled to have a new home on the network and are licking our chops for a chance to match the bar truTV has set the past few years…I also can’t believe they’re letting us do the show live. Kudos to them for embracing what could be a real disaster. My promise to you though is that should it be a disaster, The Chris Gethard Show on truTV will be the most watchable disaster the world has ever seen.”
