Stand-up and star of single-season comedy Cristela, Cristela Alonzo, is returning to screens soon in The Gospel of Kevin, a new series from ABC. Described as a “light drama,” it’ll be a bit of a departure from the norm for Alonzo, who recently released her Netflix special, Lower Classy.
According to Deadline, The Gospel of Kevin stars Jason Ritter as a man who, after a failed suicide attempt, returns home to live with his widowed twin sister and niece. Enter Alonzo, who plays Yvette: “Tough-talking but not without compassion, a ‘source of luminescence’ and clearly divine, Yvette is a ‘warrior for God,’ who explains to Kevin that he’s been ‘tasked with a sacred mission.’”
Honestly, there are a lot of similarities between stand-up comics and angels – both are here to help us see the light, so to speak – so Alonzo’s a perfect fit in this heavenly role.
