Doug Stanhope

decided to
play a little prank
on a radio station and it went over smashingly.
Last week, the comedian called into an Iowa radio station

that believed he was the former Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten (Lydon). Though Stanhope confessed, “I don’t know shit about music,” he was able to pull off a seven-minute interview with the show’s host Mike Ragonga without him catching onto the prank. The chat was even transcribed and made it to the station’s website.
Stanhope dropped clues about being a fake, paused to make fake vomiting sounds, and pee loudly while on the phone. Sadly those parts were edited out of the audio. He also answered questions as Lydon taking shots that some of the musician’s decisions were based purely on money and needing to collect.
Stanhope had a call scheduled the same day as Lydon and then after a miscommunication and a few voicemails he realized they called him at the wrong time so he went for it.
He stated, “This time, I said fuck it, wrote down the studio number, put on the best British accent I could muster (which is absolutely fucking awful) and called in to do the interview as best as I could, being still half asleep and not knowing shit about who I am pretending to be… We assumed that there was no way it would ever air… certainly someone would realize or fact check. I mean, I left him a voicemail message on his cellphone that he was calling the wrong number.”
Stanhope called back later for his own scheduled interview and Ragonga was none the wiser. The interview has since come off the websites but here’s the audio for you compliments of Doug’s blog.
