Ed Helms may be best known as an actor and former Daily Show correspondent (and, as a nationally touring bluegrass musician), but he actually got his start on comedy club stages, as an improviser, sketch actor, and stand-up.
Helms visited Jimmy Kimmel to promote his new kid-friendly summer movie, Captain Underpants, and revealed he’s actually known co-star Kevin Hart for nearly two decades, way before either of them were headlining festivals or lending their voices to summer blockbusters.
The two aren’t just old pals, they came up in comedy together, so of course Helms has some great memories from their early days – and of course there’s a heckler story, like this one, from back when Helms hosted the open mic at the now-defunct Boston Comedy Club.
