Back in April of 2015 we reported that musician, comedian, and actor Tim Minchin was working on a musical version of Groundhog Day. Well guess what? It’s had a successful run in London and now it’s heading to Broadway.
Mark your calendars for Spring 2017 when Groundhog Day opens at the August Wilson Theatre. The London run featured American Andy Karl (Legally Blonde: The Musical, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) in the famed Phil Connors role originally played by Bill Murray in the film from 1993. No word on whether or not any of the London cast and crew will be making the leap to NY.
Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the original screenplay alongside the late-great Harold Ramis adapted the story for stage. All of the music has been written by Tim Minchin. This will be Minchin’s second musical contribution to hit the Broadway stage following up Roald Dahl’s Matilda which debuted in 2013.
Minchin, an Australian now living in England, has released six albums, five DVDs, and has performed internationally for quite some time packing out rooms around the world. Back in 2010 he embarked on an arena tour along with the Heritage Orchestra which was a scaled up version of what he normally had done up until that point. His American television credits include Californication, The Secret River, and is currently working on the 2018 animated musical comedy Larrikins for DreamWorks Animation. It will star Margot Robbie, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne, and Ben Mendelsohn. Oh, and he’ll be directing it as well.
