Kristen Wiig and Jack Nicholson are officially set to lead an English-language remake of Toni Erdmann, the German comedy that’s been ruling international awards ballots all year.
Nicholson, who was working on 2014 comedy-drama St. Vincent but ultimately bailed (passing the role to Bill Murray), was rumored to be entering a kind of quiet retirement, so this is very exciting news for fans who have been waiting over six years to see him onscreen.
And Wiig seems the perfect co-star, for this story of an eclectic aging hippie trying to reconnect with his successful daughter. Toni Erdmann debuted at Cannes and quickly rocketed to the top of critics’ charts, earning dozens of awards noms (many for female director Maren Ade), including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
