There’s a lot of advice out there for aspiring comics, but most of it amounts to “do the work.” When you’re really just starting, though, how do you figure out what work even means, in a world that’s built on jokes?
Well, Steve Martin has got your back: this spring, he’s offering a universally accessible crash course in comedy, based on the lessons he’s learned over a half century in the biz.
It’s really a course, too, offered through education startup MasterClass. More than just a series of video lectures – though there will be 25 of those, too – the $90 class includes a workbook with immersive activities, access to a community of fellow students, and a chance to have your work critiqued by Martin himself.
The series aims to introduce new performers and industry hopefuls alike to the real-world work of comedy.
From the sound of this MasterClass preview, it sounds like he’ll be a no-BS professor, too. “I was talking to some student,” he says, “and they were saying things like, where do I get an agent? How do I get a headshot? And I just thought, shouldn’t the first thing you’re thinking about be, how do I be good?”
Martin will join the ranks of other esteemed MasterClass faculty, like Werner Herzog, Aaron Sorkin, and Christina Aguilera.
