The Logan Awards for comedy music announce 2017 winners

The Logan Whitehurst Memorial Awards for Excellence in Comedy Music (aka The Logan Awards) in association with The Funny Music Project (aka The FuMP) have announced the winners for their seventh annual comedy music awards — widely recognized as “the Grammys of comedy music.” The award ceremony was held at FuMPFeST 2017, which took place this past weekend in Illinois.

The Logan Awards — named in tribute to comedy musician Logan Whitehurst, who passed away from complications of a cancerous brain tumor in 2006 — are held every year to showcase the very best in comedy music from the previous year, presented in three categories: Outstanding Original Comedy Song, Outstanding Parody Song, and Outstanding Comedy Music Video. Each year, the awards committee is run by a new chairperson, who selects two groups of jurors (three currently active comedy musicians, and three well-versed fans) to select the finalists from the list of open, elected nominees. This year, Byron Lee of DementiaRadio.org was the chairperson, and as with every year, any ties were settled by the awards’ permanent Judge, the legendary radio DJ Dr. Demento. The awards themselves resemble a “Robot Cat,” from a song by Logan.

This year’s ceremony, held on Friday June 16th, featured a mix of pre-recorded and live performances from the acts nominated, including acts such as Holy Bongwater (for their song “Donald Trump’s Wall”), Insane Ian (for the song “Doctor Who”), and Boy Meets Robot, who accepted his award mere moments after performing his song acoustically.

In the category of Outstanding Original Comedy Song, Boy Meets Robot won for their song, “The Robots Will Kill Us All,” beating out esteemed veterans Bo Burnham, Zach Sherwin, and the Arrogant Worms. The band is a newcomer to the comedy music scene, and the song was the first single and title track from their debut album — a light and fun chiptune and comedy experience.

For Outstanding Parody Song, the winner was Paul & Storm’s take on the Don McLean classic “American Pie,” a Game of Thrones themed-parody titled “Westerosi Pie,” which beat out both the previously mentioned acts Holy Bongwater and Insane Ian, as well as Steve Goodie’s former #1 hit “D*ck Heads.” While the band was not in attendance to perform their song, the music video was shown in place of a performance (only the song was nominated, however).

And finally, in the category of Outstanding Comedy Music Video, Dino-Mike took out the competition of internet fan-favorites Ninja Sex Party, The Library Bards, and Parry Gripp to receive the robot cat trophy for his animated video for “Beamer,” a send-up of the Top 40 hit “Cheerleader” by OMI, espousing the rage-inducing habits of other drivers from the perspective of a disgruntled cabbie. The roommate of the animator of the award was in attendance to accept for Dino-Mike.

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!
