Myq Kaplan has just released a brand new album. Not of comedy, but of the music variety. Well, actually some is comedy of the musical variety only if compared to those tracks on the album that are not. It’s actually best explained by Kaplan himself on the very first track as he clears up any potential confusion right from the “get-go.” And no, that’s not the name of the first track, it’s actually “Preamble.” One thing we do know for certain is that the album is absolutely, and without any denial or confusion, entitled Many Mini Musics.
Kaplan is a wordsmith if there ever was one. And there are, and he’s included. The difference is that you’ll find his name at the top of the list. He does have a Master’s Degree in linguistics after-all. His word play flows like the river found in MC Escher’s famous “Waterfall,” it’s endless. However, on Many Mini Musics, he’s decided to showcase his skill in tiny short profound bursts much like that of They Might Be Giants classic track “Fingertips” off Apollo 18. Only here they aren’t combined into one track, instead spread out across forty-two. Why forty-two? We can only hope that Kaplan’s favorite book is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
This isn’t Myq Kaplan’s first foray into music or music and comedy at the same time. Back in 2012, he teamed up with Micah Sherman for the album Please Be Seated which included the “Comedians’ National Anthem” which you can listen to here. On Many Mini Musics, Kaplan sounds like a human looking to both find and share love, excitement, happiness, and joy no matter what surrounds him or tries to prevent that from happening. Upon second listen you realize there is so much more than word play at hand and so much more at stake for Kaplan. From time to time you will come across the saying, “Musician trapped in a comedians body” or “Comedian trapped inside a musician’s body,” this album depicts both simultaneously as he looks to find the answers.
The lyrics to the final track really sum it all up, especially when you realize that it has the potential to not even be the final track. Let Kaplan explain:

Thanks for listening and taking a gamble
I know that I can have a tendency to ramble
So that’s it, for this opposite, of a pre-amble
