In anticipation of Crashing, comedian Pete Holmes’ mostly autobiographical new show about a recently divorced stand-up setting out in the big city, The Daily Beast sat down with Holmes to talk “comedy, sex, and god” – the comics’ three areas of expertise.
Holmes – the former host of TBS’ The Pete Holmes Show, which was co-produced by Conan – gives a little insight into what we can expect from his new show, which won’t shy away from the hardships endured by aspiring comics:
“I think it’s really empowering to go back to the painful, early years of stand-up and relive them for other people’s entertainment… It’s kind of a way of taking ownership over those baby steps that every stand-up had to make, no matter how great they are now. [Even Louis C.K.] stunk at the beginning. That’s kind of an untold part of the journey… Any time there’s a TV show about a stand-up, they’re typically very good. And that makes sense, because it’s very easy to sneak laughs into your show that way.”
