This week Chris Gethard setups up in a big way with the premiere of his first HBO special, Career Suicide. The Judd Apatow-produced special was an Off Broadway one-man show for a while that was taped for HBO. It’s show about, “suicide, depression, alcoholism, and all the other funniest parts of life.” This might sound like a bumout, but Gethard’s specialty is taking the darker parts of life and turning them into something beautiful. Gethard’s never been a typical comedian, so it stands to reason that he wouldn’t create a typical comedy special. A former mainstay at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, he began hosting oddball variety hour The Chris Gethard Show on Manhattan public access in 2011; now, TCGS has two seasons on Fusion, and Gethard is an accomplished stand-up comic who frequently tours with Mike Birbiglia, when he’s not scripting hit shows, etc. Career Suicide was shot at the Lynn Redgrave Theatre in New York City.
