Now that summer has pretty much come and gone, TV is just about back in full swing. Some of the networks are getting a jump on the new fall season as we have five series premieres, one new special, and the Primetime Emmy winners will be revealed.
On Wednesday, the second season of Documentary Now! premieres on IFC. The Emmy-nominated spoof series hails from Saturday Night Live vets Bill Hader, Seth Meyers and Fred Armisen and will include parodies of classic documentaries Stop Making Sense, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, The Kid Stays in the Picture,The War Room, Salesman, and Swimming to Cambodia. Guest stars include Anne Hathaway, Mia Farrow, Peter Bogdanovich and Peter Fonda.
Also on Wednesday, new animated comedy Legends of Chamberlain Heights premieres on Comedy Central. The show centers on three high school freshmen. It has already been renewed for a 2nd season. And we also get the start of the 20th season of South Park. 20th.
This Friday, three more premieres are coming our way. First up, Fleabag on Amazon. This dark, sexually explicit British comedy series stars Broadchurch‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Olivia Coleman, Outlander‘s Bill Patterson, and American comedian Brett Gelman. It’s an adaptation of Waller-Bridge’s award-winning play of the same name in which she stars as the title character, an unhappy, porn-addicted woman struggling with modern life in London.
Up next, on HBO, High Maintenance premieres. The critically acclaimed web series about a Brooklyn pot dealer and his diverse group of clients moves to HBO for six new episodes. All of the previous episodes will also be available to stream via HBO Now/HBO Go. Finally on Friday, Cedric the Entertainer: Live from the Ville premieres on Netflix.
Closing out the week will be the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. The big awards show, and first of the new season, will let us know is the long lasting television shows will maintain their dominance or get beat by a slew of newcomers. More than a handful of comedy categories will be decided.
