This week on TV we get two new special, one each from two of the world’s best in Lewis Black and Russell Peters. We also see the return of some of TV’s cult favorites and two premieres from HBO. And week two of Saturday Night Live is in full effect.
On Tuesday, The Mindy Project – which was saved last season by streaming service Hulu – returns for its fifth season. Guests this 16-episode fifth season will include returning favorites B.J. Novak and Bill Hader along with newcomers such as Nasim Pedrad. Bryan Greenberg is among the new cast members.
Then, on The CW, and from some of the team behind Jane the Virgin (and, like that show, based on a South American format, in this case the Brazilian series How to Enjoy the End of the World) comes the dramedy No Tomorrow about the budding romance between a straight-laced office worker (Tori Anderson) and a man (Galavant‘s Joshua Sasse) who lives life to the fullest—because he thinks the apocalypse is rapidly approaching.
On Thursday, season two of truTV’s first original scripted series Those Who Can’t kicks off. Guest stars in Season 2 include Cheri Oteri, Patton Oswalt, Baron Vaughn, Susie Essman and Kyle Kinane. Additional guest stars throughout the season include Will Sasso, Rich Fulcher, Hana Mae Lee, Ginger Gonzaga, Eddie Pepitone, Jamie Denbo, Jon Dore, Ian Karmel, Sean Patton, Gregg Henry, Jade Catta-Preta, Noah Crawford and wrestling legend Kurt Angle. Season 2 will also welcome back returning guest stars Mary Lynn Rajskub as the school’s eccentric drama teacher, Sonya Eddy, the principal’s jaded administrative assistant, and Jason Sklar and Randy Sklar who both play the school’s physician.
Then on Friday we get new comedy specials Lewis Black: Black to the Future and Russell Peters: Almost Famous. The former on Comedy Central, the latter on Netflix. Also on Netflix this Friday, The Ranch returns.
This Saturday sees the second episode of season 42 of Saturday Night Live. The episode will be hosted by Lin-Manuel Miranda with musical guest Twenty One Pilots.
And finally, on Sunday, HBO hits us with two premieres. First up is Divorce. Star Sarah Jessica Parker returns for her follow-up to that network’s long-running hit Sex and the City. Created by Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe) and produced by Paul Simms (Girls), Divorce finds Parker playing mother of two Frances as her decade-long marriage to Robert (Thomas Haden Church) begins to fall apart—though very slowly and (one hopes) comedically. Molly Shannon and Tracy Letts also star.
And then Insecure joins the lineup. Actress/writer Issa Rae (best known for her web series Awkward Black Girl) heads the cast of this new South Los Angeles-set comedy series (that she co-created with Larry Wilmore) that aims to explore “the black female experience in an unclichéd and authentic way.” Rae appears to be just the second black woman (following Wanda Sykes over a decade ago) to create and star in a TV comedy series.
