On Monday, the Comedy Central Roast of Rob Lowe finally hits the arrives. The much talked about Roast has been overly discussed that it should have actually been called Comedy Central Roast of Ann Coulter with Rob Lowe. We’ll soon find out.
Additionally on Monday, we get a double dip of new comedy shows from MTV. First up is Mary + Jane. The show follows Jordan (Scout Durwood) and Paige (Jessica Rothe), two twenty-something best friends who run an all-female weed delivery service in Los Angeles. Filled with funny, raw and bizarre adventures, the show explores the uncharted territory as Los Angeles comes out of the Green Closet and gets into high and higher times. Not to be confused with HBO’s High Maintenance.
Right after the premiere of Mary + Jane comes Loosely Exactly Nicole. Nicole Byer is living the Hollywood dream. Well, Hollywood adjacent – the deep valley to be precise and it’s not so much a dream but a struggle. In this hilarious half-hour comedy, we’ll watch as Nicole, exuding her special brand of confidence and irreverence, demonstrates the hilarious missteps of what it means to be out on your own for the first time. She’ll deal with humiliating auditions, unpaid electric bills, friendship ups and downs, and the battlefield that is Tinder as she slowly but surely finds her voice as a comedian.
Writer (30 Rock), actor (Community), and recording artist (Childish Gambino) Donald Glover created and stars in the new FX series Atlanta as a struggling loner who is drawn into Atlanta’s rap scene as his cousin’s (Tyree Henry) hip hop career takes off. While the show is not without its laugh-out-loud moments, it is often more drama than comedy. It’s also a refreshing counterpoint to Empire, with a small-scale, quiet, personal story about people struggling to make a living. Two new episodes air back-to-back this Tuesday.
This Thursday, FX is at it again with another new series. This one is called Better Things. It’s a new series from Pamela Adlon and Louis C.K. (who writes and/or directs many of the episodes). Adlon stars as the former actress and single mom of three daughters—a character loosely based on Adlon’s own life.
On Friday, Amazon starts to stream its new comedy One Mississippi. The best-reviewed entry among Amazon’s fall pilot batch last year, this pitch-black half hour is created by and stars comedian Tig Notaro, and is loosely based on her own life. (She plays a fictionalized version of herself.) Louis C.K. and Diablo Cody serve as producers, while Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said) directs. The cast also includes Casey Wilson, John Rothman, and Noah Harpster.
Finally, on Saturday, get ready for Jeff Ross’s most dangerous Roast yet: an armed police force. Ross crosses the (thin blue) line in his latest adventure, shipping up to Boston to roast and ride along with the Boston Police Department. Jeff Ross Roasts Cops – a one-hour special combining documentary filmmaking, stand-up comedy and investigative journalism – premieres.
