The world might’ve just got a bit more darker today as comedy legend Don Rickles has passed at the age of 90. He died from kidney failure in his Los Angeles home with his wife Barbara by his side. Fly those flags at half mast folks because a true comedy legend has passed on. Yes, he was 90 years old, but damn if this one doesn’t just sting a bit too much.
Mr. Warmth himself was one of the greatest insult comics ever. Roasting celebrities at the Friars Clubs, on the streets, late night panels, in movies, on TV and pretty much everywhere in between. Many saw Rickles roasting you was a badge of honer and it sure was. Rickles has done it all, but he began his career performing in Vegas, and hobnobbed with celebrities. He was famous for taking the piss out of pretty much everyone, including Frank Sinatra. At the time Sinatra was the biggest, but that didn’t intimidate him one bit. Just watch the hours of late night footage where he’s go head-to-head with Sinatra while on Carson. Those appearances are things of legend. Perhaps one of our favorite Rickles/Tonight Show stories involves him guest hosting one night, breaking an cigarette box and Carson seeking revenge the next night by interrupting a Rickles TV taping next door.
He was one of the only comedians that would publicly make fun of Frank Sinatra and the world (and Frank) loved him for it.
He’s performed countless shows, and was the subject of a 2007 documentary, Mr. Warmth which showed his latter life as a comedian. Rickles kept working and appearing on late night shows until the end with an appearance on Fallon happening just a few months back. Just a few weeks ago, he announced a new dinner series, Dinner with Don.
As fitting, many in the comedy community pay their respect to the legend.
