With the sad news of Alex Trebek's passing, we figured we would take a look back at a moment in Saturday Night Live history.
Back in the mid-90’s, SNL unveiled a sketch that would go on to help define that era of the show, and quickly became a fan favorite. Celebrity Jeopardy. The premise was pretty standard, but what made it work so well was the fact that the celebrities were so beyond stupid on the show. And the glue that held the madness together was Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek.
Cut to May of 2002. With Will Ferrell leaving the show, on his final episode they did one last Celebrity Jeopardy. Of course it was brought back three more times in the years that followed, but we didn’t know that. And Alex Trebek showed what a trooper he is and joined Ferrell alongside for a memorable Saturday Night Live moment. And even got his own jab in at Darrell Hammond’s ball-busting Sean Connery. Being able to poke fun at yourself is one of the greatest character strengths one can have. And Alex Trebek proved such in that moment.
Rest In Peace, Alex Trebek.
