“Abbott Elementary” picked up for a full second season at ABC

When Abbott Elementary premiered on ABC back in December, it didn’t take long for the series to take off. During the course of its 13-episode first season, the show managed to become ABC’s number 1 comedy with adults 18-49. That’s not bad for a mid-season replacement.

Back in March, the show got picked up for an initial 13-episode second season, with talk of more being added depending on how the show did in the fall. However, the show must have show significant promise that they’ve already announced it’s been picked up for a full season order of 22-episodes.

The series – which stars Quinta Brunson – follows what happens when “a group of dedicated, passionate teachers — and a slightly tone-deaf principal — are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life. Though these incredible educators may be outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do — even if they don’t love the school district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children.”

The pick-up was actually hinted at a Comic Con panel yesterday.

“We spent a lot of the first season showing what this show is capable of. … Now we get to have some fun,” Brunson said of the second season. “We’ve done all the building, and now we get to have some of these fun bottle episodes.” Executive Producer Patrick Schumacker added, “and more episodes.”
