This morning the Grammy nominations were announced and the list of comedy names earning noms are some of the biggest in the business. Though, things are slightly different this year. For most of these specials, they we1re produced with the intent of airing as a Netflix special and not a singular album. Those specials were later released as albums qualifying them for Grammy consideration.
Here are the 2017 nominations.
Dave Chappelle The Age Of Spin & Deep In The Heart Of Texas
Two specials released together and part of Chappelle's overall 3 special deal with Netflix. These two specials were produced by Chappelle independently and part of his archives. Released in March 2017, in less than a month's time they became the most popular stand-up comedy specials on Netflix ever.
Jim Gaffigan Cinco
Gaffigan's 5th special (one for every kid) and his first after the end of his TV show. Netflix premiered the special in January 2017 and it was later released as an album by Comedy Dynamics in the Spring.
Jerry Seinfeld Jerry Before Seinfeld
After nearly 20 years of no stand-up specials, Netflix coaxed Jerry Seinfeld out of "retirement." Seinfeld took the opportunity to dive back into the archives of his early career and perform material based on his childhood. He then taped it live at the Comic Strip Live in NYC, one of the first clubs he ever worked.
Sarah Silverman A Speck Of Dust
Sarah Silverman is always down to be subversive and A Speck Of Dust shows just that, even in the trailer she's out to stir the pot and she does it in only a way that Sarah Silverman can.
Kevin Hart What Now?
Hart released the special as a movie in theaters in October 2016, it was later released as an album.
