EXCLUSIVE: Lewis Garnham on Google Maps, the UK Comedy Scene and “Choosing The Wrong Story To Tell”

Australian comedian Lewis Garnham is going off script-mode in his comedy special, Choosing the Wrong Story To Tell, and it makes for a hilarious and heartwarming watch. From insightful looks into the history most important to school children to run-ins with familiar faces, we believe these stories are the right ones to keep you laughing and wanting more from the award-winning comic.

As he gears up for Choosing The Wrong Story To Tell's premiere on the Comedy Exports channel, we had the opportunity to chat with Lewis about this special, his comedic inspirations and his innovations in technology.

When did you decide you wanted to become a stand-up comedian?

“After my first set. I was 17 and I did 5 minutes at an open mic. I was terrible, awkward, had no skills whatsoever and it was still the most exciting thing I'd ever done.”

Who are your comedy heroes?

“To be honest I don't watch heaps of stand-up but I've always found Stewart Lee really inspiring.”

What is your favorite moment/joke from this special?

“The story about the memory loss guy and the Uber Eats story at the end are both really close to my heart.”

Have you reached out to Google to let them know about your innovative idea to make Google Maps more interesting?

“They're not returning my calls. Do you have a contact there?”

You’re from Australia, but now you’re based in London. What have you learned about the UK comedy scene that you’ve implemented into your stand-up?

“Crowd-work is a lot bigger here. I'd like to do more crowd work but I'm deaf in my left ear and it really fucks up the flow when you have to keep asking the audience member to repeat themselves cause you didn't hear them…”

Where can people catch you live?

“In 2026 I'll be touring a new hour in Australia, the UK and hopefully the USA…”

Last but certainly not least, would you rather fight one 800 pound gorilla or 800 one pound gorillas?

“I would connect on a spiritual level with the 800 pound gorilla and the 800 one pound gorillas, I'd convince them that we shouldn't fight. I'd instead implore them to round up an army of gorillas and go out and fight fascist politicians.”

You can tune in to the premiere of Choosing the Wrong Story To Tell at

800 Pound Gorilla’s Comedy Exports channel on September 24th at 9 AM CST/3PM BST.
