Just For Laughs Cancels 2024 Comedy Festival

Breaking news: Just For Laughs Montreal has announced that they’re canceling their annual comedy festival this year.

According to an article published by the CBC, “The Montreal company that operates the Just for Laughs comedy festival has cancelled the 2024 edition of the event after filing a notice of intention to make a proposal to creditors — a formal process under Canada's Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.”

What Just For Laughs Montreal is saying about the future of the comedy festival.

In a press release sent out this morning, the company talked about the financial strain of the festival. They lost revenues during the pandemic, as most companies had. They are currently trying to restructure it, and remain hopeful that the festival will get to come back in 2025.

This news is surprising, but it does kind of make sense. Within the last few years, JFL has taken on loads of new opportunities, including partnering with Austin’s Moontower Comedy Festival and launching a Cancun festival. It’s very possible that these two ventures added to the strain, but the company never announced how either would be affected going forward.

This is definitely sad, as JFL has long been a Mecca for comedy fans and the industry in general. We do hope that it’s able to make a full comeback for 2025.
