"Robot Chicken" returns with a 9th season (and a "Walking Dead"-themed special)

Adult Swim's hit stop-motion animated show Robot Chicken is coming back -- and co-creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich shared a first look at the upcoming ninth season at ComicCon last week.

Robot Chicken has been off the air since May of 2016, and a lot's gone on since then; the show, which uses pop culture-inspired action figures to skewer celebrities and current events, will have quite a lot to cover, and judging by the trailer, they'll at least dive into HBO's Westworld and the Mad Max reboot -- and, in true Robot Chicken fashion, there are plenty of throwback references, like a surprise appearance from early internet hero Homestar Runner.

And because it was ComicCon, the Robot Chicken creators also screened an exclusive preview of their upcoming Walking Dead-themed episode -- an entire special, directed by Seth Green, dedicated to everyone's favorite zombie show.

Robot Chicken doesn't have a set date for its ninth season premiere -- we just know the first episode, and the Walking Dead special, are "coming soon."
