SXSW just announced the comedy lineup of its annual music/tech/pop culture festival and as usual, it's loaded full of great comedy programming. So much in fact, they've added an additional day of comedy, choosing to begin on Friday, March 9th (instead of Saturday) and running through Tuesday, March 14th.
On Friday, WMFU's Dave Hill with host Cavett on Comedy, a conversation with broadcasting legend Dick Cavett. From starting as a writer on Jack Paar’s The Tonight Show to his very own show. The Hill and Cavett will discuss the man's historic career.
Also showing up over the course of the festival - Comedy Central’s Corporate Retreat will celebrate the season-one finale of Corporate which will feature the show's creators, Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson, and Jake Weisman, along with co-stars Adam Lustick, Aparna Nancherla, and Baron Vaughn. Joe Pera will show a sneak peek of his new Adult Swim show, Joe Pera Talks With You as he anchors a show with Jo Firestone and Conner O’Malley. Nancherla, Firestone, will join Maeve Higgins as they bring Brooklyn’s show Butterboy to Austin. Which will also feature Roy Wood Jr. and others. Adam Pally will be present with the cast of the movie Most Likely To Murder at the festival which also includes Rachel Bloom.
UCB’s flagship show, ASSSCAT will return as will (ahem) The Laugh Button Live! with Gotham Comedy Club as we present a lineup of favorites from the iconic club’s stage. Dave Hill and musician Phil Costello, will return as the faux black metal band Witch Taint. After a morning SXSW Conference discussion between Jake Tapper and the real Bernie Sanders, comic and expert impressionist, James Adomian will hold a Bernie Sanders Town Hall. Adomian will later perform his Edinburgh Fringe show, Lacking in Character, which critiques masculinity in our culture and the circus fire of today’s American politics.
In partnership with SXSW Music and AUDIBLE IMPACT, Nick Offerman will host a charity stand-up show at Austin City Limits Live which will feature Jim Gaffigan and other festival headliners.
truTV has long supported SXSW Comedy by creating an inviting green room experience for festival comedians. This year, the network will expand its sponsorship to also bring its distinct, original touch Esther’s Follies, the beloved Austin theater and SXSW Comedy headquarters, enhancing the festival-going experience with a comedic art installation.
On the podcasting front, Upright Citizen Brigade co-founder Matt Besser will return with improv4humans. Scott Aukerman returns with Comedy Bang! Bang! as does Doug Benson with Doug Loves Movies. Film historian Leonard Maltin will also tape an episode of Maltin on Movies with Bill Hader. Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynold's terrific history podcast The Dollop. Robin Thede will tape The Randown as will the popular Stuart Goldsmith podcast, The Comedian’s Comedian which will interview James Davis and Ron White.
In addition the following funny films will be featured as part of SXSW Film - Rachel Bloom and Adam Pally produce and star in the comedy-mystery Most Likely to Murder. Stories of fatherhood play out in both Hearts Beat Loud starring Nick Offerman and You Can Choose Your Family starring Jim Gaffigan. The documentary Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes, explores the life and career of Muhammad Ali through his many interviews with Dick Cavett, and Lauren Lapkus stars in The Unicorn. Festival favorite Doug Benson will join Austin’s Master Pancake Theater in lampooning one of the lesser Leprechaun sequels in a live movie-mock-along.
