Comedian Tom Shillue stopped by The Late Show to visit his old friend Stephen Colbert last night - and it's true, the two go way, way back.
Shillue and Colbert share a very special credit: they both worked on The Daily Show back before it was even The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, in the early days when comic Craig Kilborn was the host.
"I learned from you," Shillue told Colbert,you had a way of interviewing people, you would gain their trust so well -- and they shouldn't have trusted you."
Colbert, who remembers being "the new guy" on The Daily Show staff, couldn't agree more. "They shouldn't trust anyone in the press, because it's all about getting your story; the press latches on to you like a lamprey and sucks and sucks and sucks, until your soul is as dry as a crouton. They have to, they have to get their story."
Shillue has the distinct honor of working for one of the world's most liberal news shows, and also Fox News -- "We're like the bizarro twins," says Colbert of their divergent post-Daily Show careers. As co-host of The Five, and then host of (now canceled) early morning news / comedy show Red Eye, Shillue was a daily fixture on the network, and remains a correspondent for Fox News.
More recently, Shillue released his first book, Mean Dads for a Better America: The Generous Rewards of an Old-Fashioned Childhood, a satirical and somewhat conservative take on parenting full of anecdotes from Shillue's own 70s-era upbringing.
