Happy 2025, everyone! 2024 brought us some great moments in comedy, from groundbreaking specials to hilarious new films and TV shows. It seemed like there was no shortage of new content coming out, and it feels like 2025 is shaping up to build upon that!
In honor of the New Year, we thought we’d take a look at some of the things that we’re most looking forward to in comedy in 2025.
George Lopez’s Final Special
Last year, George Lopez announced that his forthcoming stand-up special will be his last. Taped at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, this special will mark the 7th for the comedian, and is set to premiere on Prime Video sometime this year. As for why he’s hanging up the mic, Lopez joked, “I’ve subjected the American people to enough of my crap.”
Happy Gilmore 2
For anyone that grew up on 90’s comedies, Happy Gilmore surely has a special place in their hearts. The Adam Sandler golf film has become a bonafide cult classic, and now Sandler is finally giving the people what they want: a sequel. Sandler announced the sequel last year, and he’s pulling out all the stops with the returning cast - including Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin - and cameos - like Travis Kelce and Eminem. The film is rumored to be dropping on Netflix sometime this summer.
SNL 50th
When it comes to comedy institutions, you’ll be hard pressed to find one that’s bigger than Saturday Night Live. The landmark NBC sketch show is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and they fully intend to pull out all the stops to celebrate it. On February 16th, there’s going to be a three-hour Primetime special, live from Radio City Music Hall. All of the cast and crew from the show’s history will be there, and it will certainly be a night that you won’t want to miss!
Shifting Gears
Tim Allen has had a longstanding relationship with ABC. First in the 90’s, he had his popular sitcom, Home Improvement. Then in the last decade, he had Last Man Standing, which eventually moved to Fox. Now he’s returning to the network alongside Kat Dennings with Shifting Gears, where he plays a widower who takes in his estranged daughter and her children. The show premieres January 8th.
The Studio
In 2023, Seth Rogen teamed up with Apple TV+ for the series Platonic. Now, Rogen is returning to the streamer for a new series, The Studio. In the series, Rogen plays a newly appointed head of a fictional film studio. The show follows Rogen and the crew as they struggle to complete films in a competitive market. This is one of many TV projects that Rogen has in the pipeline, and the premise certainly sounds promising!
Gabriel Iglesias: Legend of Fluffy
Gabriel Iglesias is returning to Netflix with a brand-new special, Legend of Fluffy. This is following his 2022 special at Dodgers Stadium, Stadium Fluffy. According to the official press release, this hour “promises to deliver Iglesias’ signature humor and charm, chronicling a comedic journey through the perils of life, from dating and home break-ins to turbulent plane rides.”
