Christopher McDonald Says 'Happy Gilmore 2' Script Has Been Written & In Development

The classic Adam Sandler comedy Happy Gilmore was released nearly thirty years ago and the beloved sports-comedy remains to be one of Sandler's most popular movies to date. And now, the original film is reportedly getting a sequel.

Christopher McDonald, who plays the film's antagonist Shooter McGavin, said a first draft of the script has already been written and is currently in development.

What Christopher McDonald is saying about the Happy Gilmore sequel.

The news was first shared by the actor in an interview on Audacy's 92.3 The Fan. He shares about how he "saw Adam about two weeks ago, and Sandler says to him, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this." McDonald asks, ‘What?’ Sandler says, "How about that,’ and he shows him [McDonald] the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

McDonald suggested that his comments should perhaps be “cut” from the interview, “because I don’t want to be a liar.” Still, he said, “he did show me that [script], and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

The project will likely land at Netflix, where Sandler holds his long-term & on-going relationship with the streamer under his Happy Madison production company. His most recent films for the streamer include Spaceman, Leo & You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah.

The original film follows Sandler playing an aspiring professional hockey player, Happy Gilmore, who discovers he's actually a talented golfer. To save his grandmother's house from foreclosure, Gilmore joins a golf tournament to try and win enough money to buy the house for her.

Who can forget about that Bob Barker?
