Despite a seemingly definite end to his storyline in movie number two, Jim Carrey is set to return as Dr. Robotnik on the big screen in Sonic the Hedgehog 3  (first reported by Variety).

Most known for his swirly mustache and evil chuckle, the antagonist will return to the screen in the third cinematic installment of the popular franchise.

What we know about Jim Carrey's return to the "Sonic" franchise.

Jim Carrey, one of the most well-known names in cinematic comedy, originated the role of Dr. Robotnik in the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020. Carrey’s most recent acting role was of the same character in the second film which was released in 2022. Despite teasing a retirement in acting, it seems as though Carrey could not say no to coming back to the screen.

Other stars in the franchise include Ben Schwartz (the voice of Sonic), James Marsden, Tika Sumpter and Idris Elba.

The films follow Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog, and his battle to stop Dr. Robotnik from achieving his goal of world domination. With the first two movies reaching a combined total of $870.8 million in box office revenue, it’s no wonder that Sonic fans were stoked to hear this news. The movie's release date was unveiled on socials with a teaser clip writing, “You all thought I was gone, but I’ve just been underground. What you’ve seen from me is only a #shadow of things to come…”

The distinct evil laugh that can be heard in the teaser prompted fans to question the idea of Carrey returning to the franchise and how his character will send Sonic and his crew on a new adventure.

When does "Sonic the Hedgehog" 3 come out?

The new movie hits theaters December 20, 2024.
