Earlier this summer, Hulu announced its acquisition of the new Jake Johnson directorial-feature debut, Self Reliance. After getting temporarily removed from its release schedule likely due to the writer's & actor's strikes, the streamer has released the official trailer & it looks like a true comedy thriller.
What's "Self Reliance" about?
The official synopsis reads: “When a middle-aged man, Tommy Walcott (played by Jake Johnson) is invited into a limo by famous actor Andy Samberg (yes, he actually plays himself), his dull life takes a thrilling turn. Johnson is offered a chance to win a million dollars in a dark web reality TV show, where assassins from all over the world attempt to kill him for 30 days. The catch? He can’t be killed if he’s not entirely alone, leading him to recruit an unlikely team to help him survive.”
The first trailer shows a taste of the many hilarious ways Johnson tries to not be alone to truly win the million dollars, which you should see for yourself in the trailer above.
Who's in the cast of "Self Reliance"?
Along with Johnson & Samberg, this cast could not be more stacked. Starring alongside them are Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales, GaTa ("Dave"), Emily Hampshire ("Schitt's Creek"), Mary Holland, Boban Marjanović, with Christopher Lloyd, and Wayne Brady.
The new movie is produced by The Lonely Island & executive produced by Johnson & Lonely Island members Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone & Akiva Schaffer. This marks the group's latest production since directing & producing Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers for Disney+ in 2022.
When does "Self Reliance" premiere on Hulu?
Self Reliance premieres on Hulu January 12th.
