It easily goes without saying that podcasting in 2024 has taken on a new life of its own as an entertaining art form & medium. More often than not (especially in the stand-up comedy space), when one's being described as a stand-up comedian chances are likely that they also take on the title as podcaster. And the cool thing with podcasting is that it acts as a great way for comedians to connect with their fans in a different way that can't always be reflected on stage performing stand-up.
And with the abundant amount of comedians working today comes an abundant amount of comedy podcasts to keep up with. So in this semi-regular series beginning with Part 1, we'll be spotlighting some of the biggest comedians working today who host the biggest & funniest comedy podcasts online right now. Cause like a comedy podcast you'd enjoy on the go, comedy albums are also great for enjoying on the go or wherever you listen to podcasts for another funny fix. Here are five great comedy albums from today's biggest comedy podcasters to check out on 800 Pound Gorilla!
Andrew Santino: Cheeseburger
When not performing stand-up on stage or acting on television, Andrew Santino can currently be both heard & seen hosting two of the biggest comedy podcasts online. He co-hosts the wildly popular & funny Bad Friends Podcast with friend & frequent collaborator Bobby Lee as well as his own solo show Whiskey Ginger. The aforementioned show has gained such a massive following online that's spawned a world tour & garnered the attention of Hulu where their show is currently being developed as an animated series, the same streaming service that will also release Santino's next stand-up special.
Earlier this year, Santino's latest comedy special from Netflix titled Cheeseburger was released as comedy album from 800 Pound Gorilla and fans of his who know him from that special can get to know the multi-hyphenate comic better while experiencing the album on the go. And in his latest hour, "no topic is safe in this unfiltered stand-up set from the comic as he skewers everything from global warming to sex injuries to politics."
Dan Soder: Son of a Gary
Dan Soder is a New York-based & mainstay comedian who currently hosts the podcast Soder, the show that launched late last year & consistently charts in the top 20 of all comedy podcasts on Apple and Spotify. Before launching Soder, Dan most famously co-hosted The Bonfire on SiriusXM with fellow comic Big Jay Oakerson.
Soder's 2019 HBO comedy special, Son of a Gary, is available as a comedy album on 800 Pound Gorilla and in this special, Soder offers his funny insights on drug dogs at the airport, the customer service generation, fake fights in the shower, and what it's like to have an alcoholic but fun dad in a performance from The Bowery Ballroom in New York City.
Big Jay Oakerson: Dog Belly
Big Jay Oakerson is one of the funniest comics working today & a trailblazer for the comedy podcasting world. When not performing stand up, Jay co-host's The Bonfire alongside Robert Kelly on SiriusXM and is co-host of the wildly popular podcasts Legion of Skanks with Luis J. Gomez and Dave Smith. The aforementioned podcast since its inception has spawned one of the biggest cult followings online and plays a big role in the annual Skankfest comedy festival held in Las Vegas.
In Jay's latest special Dog Belly, he delivers a killer hour of standup material filmed live at his home turf of Skankfest in Vegas. The new special, which is executive produced by Ari Shaffir, was recently re-released on 800 Pound Gorilla & the album is available to listen to here!
Brittany Schmitt: From Ho To Housewife
Brittany Schmitt is an LA-based, Wisconsin-raised comic who's spent time on the road opening for fellow comics Theo Von & Chris Redd. When not performing stand-up or pulling millions of views on her stand-up clips online, Schmitt opposite Brittany Furlan Lee (which they're self-described as "the Brittanys" annoyingly) co-hosts the podcast This Is The Worst, where they navigate the nightmare of existence, giving their takes on your worst moments while sharing their own unhinged stories and cringe-worthy ‘worsts’.
In 2022, Schmitt released her debut comedy special & album with 800 Pound Gorilla aptly titled From Ho To Housewife. She crafted her story as the title implies into a comedy special that tackles all the sex, drugs and basketball this girl from Wisconsin can muster. There’s no sugarcoating it, be ready for a special brand of blunt humor, as Brittany goes hard with no hesitation and couldn’t care less, therein lies her charm.
Marc Maron: Too Real
Marc Maron is indisputably one of the day one's of not just breaking ground as a stand-up comedian with a podcast, but often credited as being one of the early adopters of the podcasting medium. The beloved comic has been writing and performing comedy for print, stage, radio, online and television for over three decades and with his landmark podcast WTF with Marc Maron, which achieves more than 55 million listens per year, he’s interviewed icons such as Robin Williams, Keith Richards, Nicole Kidman, and former US president Barack Obama (and that's just cracking the surface of the notable guests he's brought on).
His acclaimed 2017 Netflix comedy special, Too Real, is available as a comedy album on 800 Pound Gorilla. And in this classic hour, he unleashes a storm of ideas on meditation, mortality, documentary films, and our weird modern world. Pairing his candid conversational style with personal honesty, modern-day philosopher Maron discusses everything from art and aging to his relationship with his parents and the longevity of the Rolling Stones, in front of a packed house at Pantages Theatre in Minneapolis.
