Rachel Bloom has been touring with her one-woman show, Death, Let Me Do My Show, for the last two years now. She’s performed it in Los Angeles, at comedy festivals throughout the country, in London, and even off-Broadway. Now, Bloom will be taking the show to Netflix as her next stand-up special.
Directed by Seth Barris and taped at the Williamstown Theater Festival in July, the show (titled for Netflix as Death, Let Me Do My Special) does, of course, feature some of her trademark humor as well as songs. But there’s also more emotional layers that she stacks on top of that. According to the press release from when the show went off-Broadway last she, she ironically said that the show is "NOT about the ever-present spectre of death ... [and] will in NO way explore the pandemic and all the tumultuous events that ensued in her personal life."
Death, however, does play into the subject matter, as the title suggests. And it forces her to show her feelings and her vulnerability within the show while onstage. It is as real and heartbreaking at times as it is funny, which can also sum up life in general. The pandemic also is a through line, as she gave birth to her daughter just as it was beginning.
When does "Rachel Bloom: Death, Let Me Do My Special" come out?
The special premieres on Netflix October 15th.
