Some sad news for movie buffs and comedy fans. Teri Garr - the talented actress who broke out in TV and films in the 1970’s - has passed away at 79. This follows a long battle with MS - which she got diagnosed with in 2002 - and a 2006 brain aneurysm. She wound up retiring in 2011.
Garr came from a show business family. Her father Ed Garr was a comedian in vaudeville and her mother was a dancer - having been a Rockette - turned costumer. After growing up in Ohio and then LA, Garr moved to New York where she studied acting at the famed Actor’s Studio.
Remembering the life & legacy of Teri Garr.
Garr appeared in various TV shows and films as a dancer - including in Elvis Presley pictures like Viva Las Vegas - and in minor speaking roles before she got her big break on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, playing a variety of characters. This led to her big break into film in 1974. She had a small part in The Conversation, but was front and center in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein as Inga, opposite Gene Wilder.
Other film and TV work includes Star Trek, Close Encounters of a Third Kind, Oh God!, The Black Stallion, Mr. Mom, Tootsie, After Hours, Dumb and Dumber, Friends, Dick, The Larry Sanders Show, Let it Ride, Fraiser, and countless others.
It’s a sad end to such a great career. We definitely recommend revisiting Young Frankenstein in her memory!
