Last night was the 81st Annual Golden Globes, the award show that celebrates excellence for both American & international film & television. With many well deserved winners claiming their awards throughout the ceremony also came some funny (and not so funny) moments to acknowledge throughout the night. Here are some of the standout moments from the 2024 Golden Globes!
Stating the obvious for Jo Koy’s performance as this year's Golden Globes host.
We all really wanted Jo Koy to crush it and we indeed were excited when it was announced he was taking the gig & that stand-up comedy would have a higher precedence in this year’s ceremony. However, his performance during his monologue did not turn out exactly the way we were hoping for.
To be fair, Koy only had 10 days to prepare as he shared in his opening monologue, quite a tall order for a semi last minute hosting gig. For context, Koy was not the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s first choice of host. Other hosts that were asked to host ahead of this year’s ceremony were Chris Rock, Ali Wong, the Smartless Trio (Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes & Will Arnett), and even Globes hosts alum Tina Fey & Amy Poehler: all declined the offer.
We know the jokes about Taylor Swift & Barbie did not land as well as we all would’ve hoped for. Had Koy been hired earlier, he would've had a chance better chance to workout the material in a smaller setting before this year's show. Who knows who to blame: all we know is the odds were stacked against him & he did the absolute best he could for the very thankless job it is.
One thing remains the same before taking this gig: he’s still a fantastic comedian selling out arenas across the world with three killer Netflix specials to his name. He’s still got a long career ahead of him despite his performance during last night’s ceremony and we can also share that he’s not the only comedian to have a similar awards hosting experience (just ask David Letterman about his Oscar’s hosting stint).

It's been far & few between for stand-up comedians to be recognized at major award shows. You see it a little bit at the Emmys & Grammys. But this year, the Golden Globes finally gave stand-up comedy the platform it deserves during this year's televised ceremony.
During Jim Gaffigan's presentation, he poked some fun at how "for 80 years, good looking people threw a party" and to the audience, he boldly shared to the audience how they "finally decided to invite the talented people." This comes to show how brutal of an art form stand-up is and how long it's taken for stand-up comedians to be recognized at the awards ceremony (81 years to be exact).
Ricky Gervais landed the first win in this newly created category for his latest stand-up special on Netflix, Armageddon. While he was not present to accept this honor, it's still a step in the right direction for stand-up continuing to get higher recognition in the award show circuit.
Will Ferrell & Kristen Wiig's brilliant improv presentation.
Will Ferrell & Kristen Wiig together, best known together for their SNL sketches, could not take themselves anymore less seriously when presenting last night's award for Best Actor In A Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy.
Any chance they could present the category & nominees, they got interrupted by some terribly awkward lobby or elevator music. Only Ferrell & Wiig would know exactly what to do in a moment like this. And it's just to absolutely lean in to it, showing once again what a classic & hysterical of a comedy duo these two are.
