Jess Salomon Is Just Splendid In Her Magical Debut Solo Stand-Up Special, “Sad Witch”

Jess Salomon’s self-titled solo stand-up special Sad Witch helps us laugh even in our saddest hour. Salomon puts the audience in a trance of hysterical laughter as she defends bisexual legitimacy, gives her alibi for January 6th, and shares her comedy origin story as a U.N. war crimes lawyer. Her geopolitical perspective has led to her comedy having a dark, political edge.

After her stint as a lawyer, Salomon went on to write for the award-winning sketch comedy show Baroness Von Sketch (IFC/CBC) and CTV’s The Beaverton. Salomon has also had an audio career, writing and co-hosting the BBC World Service podcast and radio show Comedians vs The News.

As far as stand-up goes, her comedy has aired on television in Canada on CBC but her biggest accomplishment was performing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. While a part of the adored comedy duo, The El-Salomons, Salomon recorded her first special, Marriage of Convenience at the Just for Laughs Festival.

The New York based comedian likes to soften, but sometimes even sharpen, her dark edge with personal touch. Salomon isn’t afraid to be open about her marriage troubles especially in the particularly unique position she is in as Jewish woman married to a Palestinian woman who even has a tattoo of Israel with Palestine written over it. Although tensions in the Middle East have led to tensions at home, Salomon is always looking for a little levity even in the most divisive issues.

Sad Witch may be about Salomon’s issues at home but it is much more than that. It is the group therapy we need as world issues drive us apart. The Sad Witch searches the shadowed faces of the audience in the basement of Brooklyn’s Union Hall and finds laughter in the darkness.
