Last night's episode of Saturday Night Live was a highly anticipated one for comedy fans given that John Mulaney (former writer for the show) returned to host for the sixth time, it was the last episode before Tuesday's presidential election, and of course, it's the show's 50th season. So there was already a lot of excitement before this particular episode to see what the show had in store before Tuesday's election.
And in a surprising turn of events, the real Vice President Kamala Harris made a last minute cameo during the Cold Open of last night's episode where she comes face to face with Maya Rudolph's portrayal of Harris to infuse some more comedy into her campaign.
This was a rather surprising move since last month, series creator & executive producer Lorne Michaels spoke out saying he wouldn't have Harris or Donald Trump on the show. He previously said, "You can’t bring the actual people who are running on because of election laws and the equal time provisions. You can’t have the main candidates without having all the candidates, and there are lots of minor candidates that are only on the ballot in, like, three states and that becomes really complicated.”
Recapping last night's surprise Kamala Harris cameo on "SNL"!
Set during the last day & final stretch of campaigning for both Donald Trump & Kamala Harris, the open starts from the the point of view of CNN's Kaitlan Collins (Chloe Fineman) connecting with both of the parties' final rallies. James Austin Johnson's Donald Trump is sporting a garbage truck vest from driving one earlier last week in his campaign and notably spoke about how he loves women & wants to protect them "whether they like it or not." Bowen Yang as running mate JD Vance made a brief appearance before being quickly cut off by the Harris party.
We're then taken to backstage at Harris' rally in Philadelphia where we find Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan), Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg) & Kamala Harris (Maya Rudolph) reflecting on the last days of the campaign before Harris goes out to speak. President Joe Biden (Dana Carvey) later enters the room "no joke" to extend his support for his Vice President.
Then it's just Kamala in the room where she's reflecting on her own and wishes to get some wisdom from someone who's been in her shoes. Particularly "a black South Asian woman running for president, preferably from the Bay area." And to her left in the mirror is none other than the real Vice President herself Kamala Harris.
After an uproarious cheer & applause from the studio audience on shock of Harris' surprise presence, the two go back and forth for some humorous dialogue where they make many words sound like their name like "Kamala take my Pamala," "stop the chaos & end the dramala," and "watch a rom Kamala" to name a few. They also repeat together their own saying: "Keep Kamala and carry on-ala."
