We all know that guy who says he could’ve gone pro, well Danny Grossman (Adam Pally) really is that guy. In fact, Stephen Curry was second to him in middle school basketball, or so the story goes in Mr. Throwback, the new Peacock original comedy series that premieres August 8th. Curry, being an NBA legend, tries to help his middle school teammate turned memorabilia dealer find redemption…through making a documentary about Danny.
The mockumentary style six episode TV series portrays an overeager Curry who enlists the help of his crew, including Kimberly (played by Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim), to help him create a documentary about his friend. The film highlights the hilarity of megastars who bring along their childhood friends, trying to rocket them into stardom.
The difference between Curry and Grossman’s lifestyle is laughable as Grossman is offered a “placentarita” by Curry who drinks them to prep for the game. This continuing theme of grandeur vs. failure makes the creation of Grossman’s documentary only the more hilarious as it spirals out of control. However, Kimberly finds the positive, “People love a redemption story. But you know what people love even more? A trainwreck.”
Mr. Throwback is a Peacock original series starring Stephen Curry, Ego Nwodim, Adam Pally, Ayden Mayeri. The series is Curry’s first non-cameo TV role aside from docuseries and the greatest NBA shooter of all time can’t wait. Curry told Deadline , “I was excited to step into the world of scripted comedy with Mr. Throwback, a story with love for family and friends at its center.” Curry is also adding Mr. Throwback to his long list of shows he has produced. Next to Curry’s comically earnest and naive persona, Pally, Nwodim, and Mayeri bring their expertise in harvesting hardcore laughs.
NBC & Peacock hope to add to its repertoire of highly successful mockumentary style sitcoms, including The Office and Parks and Recreation, with Mr. Throwback. Peacock reunites Pally with his past coworkers Happy Endings creator, David Caspe, and writers, Daniel and Matthew Libman, who all are involved as writers and producers. Peacock has set Mr. Throwback up to be a slam dunk.
