It’s all been leading up to this. Phil Wang’s critically-acclaimed debut Netflix special Philly Philly Wang Wang, David Letterman appearance, and even his role dancing on a table with Timothée Chalamet’s Willy Wonka have all been leading up to his sophomore Netflix original comedy special, Wang In There Baby!, which will be released on September 3rd.
As a culmination of his world tour, Wang In There, Baby! was taped in the historic Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe, London’s only candlelit theatre. The beautiful and intimate venue compliments Wang as he talks about being British, being Asian, octopuses, America, and the trappings of minor fame.
Wang In There Baby! has sold-out two shows at LA’s Netflix Is A Joke Festival and been twice extended for a 64-date tour including sold-out shows at London’s Royal Festival Hall and Hammersmith Eventim Apollo. It has also been performed at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Wang’s success at festivals comes from his beginning days where his debut special Philly Philly Wang Wang broke records at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe, selling out its entire run before the festival even began. The hour also sold-out a final extra show in the 750-seater Pleasance Grand.
In addition to his screen presence in his 2021 Netflix special Philly Philly Wang Wang, Wang has had many television appearances. Before his role in Wonka, Wang frequented talk shows and late night. He was a guest on The Graham Norton Show (C4) and That’s My Time with David Letterman (Netflix). He has performed stand-up on Late Night with Seth Meyers (NBC). Wang has also made the television rounds, appearing in Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central), Life & Beth (Hulu), The Comedy Line-Up (Netflix), Taskmaster (Channel 4), Live at the Apollo (BBC2) and ten times on Have I Got News For You (BBC1), with his latest as the host.
Have I Got News For You is not the only thing Wang has hosted. His love for gaming led him to host the 20th BAFTA Games Awards, a celebration of excellence and creative achievement in games. He also co-hosts the Budpod podcast with Pierre Novellie . Wang has done a lot in the audio space. He created an Audible original series, Phil Wang Hates Horror. Wang also wrote and starred in his own Radio 4 special, Wangsplaining which garnered a BBC Audio Award for Best Scripted Comedy (Longform). Wang has also written a comedic memoir and observational essay, Sidesplitter, which was featured on The Times and Sunday Times’ Books of the Year list for his account of the duplexity of being a Eurasian man in the West and the East.
Having traveled the world for his world tour, Phil Wang is tired of traveling with people who are afraid to let out their inner tourist. “Get over yourself, you are a tourist,” says the comedian in Wang In There Baby!
