After 50 years on the air, Saturday Night Live is one of our landmark comedy institutions. At the center of that institution is Lorne Michaels, the creator and executive producer who oversees it to this day. However, Lorne has always been content to let the work speak for itself and remain in the shadow. As a result, what we know about the man behind the curtain has remained limited.
Thankfully, that’s about to change. That’s because there’s a new book on the horizon that will introduce us to the man behind the myth once and for all. Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live is slated to come out next year, just in time for the 50th anniversary celebrations.
Everything to know about the new Lorne Michaels book, "Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live."
The book was written by Susan Morrison from The New Yorker. According to the book’s description, it will “introduce you to him, in full, for the first time. With unprecedented access to Michaels (who has spent his career mostly avoiding reporters) and the entire SNL apparatus, The New Yorker’s Susan Morrison takes you behind the curtain for the rollicking, definitive story of how Lorne created the institution that would change comedy forever.”
That access that Michaels granted is reportedly hundreds of interviews. Additionally, it features insights from friends and collaborators that includes Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, Steve Martin, Chris Rock, Amy Poehler, Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Buck Henry, Chevy Chase, and more.
The book comes out from Random House on February 18th, 2025.
