This just in: after an uproarious noise from comedy & Saturday Night Live fans on social media yesterday vouching to tap beloved comedian & icon Steve Martin to play Vice President Kamala Harris' newly announced vice presidential running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Martin is out of the draw & has politely declined the offer from Lorne Michaels.
Steve Martin on his decision not to play Tim Walz on SNL.
Per the LA Times, Martin told the outlet about his latest exchange with Michaels this morning following the commentary online. “I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no. I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.’ I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses.”
He continues, “It’s ongoing. It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They’re gonna find somebody really, really good. I’d be struggling.”
Martin even chimed in yesterday evening with some banter about a potential possibility at the time on Instagram's Threads saying, "I just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short."
With Maya Rudolph set to reprise Harris throughout the presidential election cycle during this monumental season, we have yet to hear about who could play Walz (whether that's one of the show's current cast members or these nine other greatly favored comedians).
Saturday Night Live returns for its 50th season September 28th on NBC.
