Mo Welch Performing Stand-Up

Mo Welch Searches For Her Estranged Dad In Docu-Special, “Dad Jokes”

It all started when Mo Welch got one of her dad jokes published in The New Yorker about his abandonment. Her father has been the source of many of Welch’s jokes and cartoons. Therefore, Welch decided there would be nothing better to do than create a docu-special about her road trip to a small town in Illinois to reunite with her estranged father after 20 years of absence.

Dad Jokes is aptly named with Welch constantly cracking jokes about her relationship with her dad as she searched for him. The Normal, Illinois native now LA based comedian co-directed the docu-special with Daniel Hartigan, utilizing what she has learned from co-directing her friend and Sweethearts Podcast co-host’s Netflix special Beth Stelling: If You Didn't Want Me Then.

As for her stand-up career, she was first selected to be a part of the CBS Showcase in 2014 and invited her back a decade later in 2024. Welch has appeared on Conan twice, once in January of 2018 and later in February of the following year. January of 2018 was huge for Welch because in addition to her late night debut on Conan, her 10 part animated series Blair also debuted on TBS Digital. Being a cartoonist and comedian is a unique niche to inhabit but Welch has found great success in it. Her comics have been published in The New Yorker, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Vice, and more. The multi-talented Welch has also written the book How To Die Alone with Workman publishing in 2019 in addition to creating an Audible series in 2020 called, Come Out, Come Out which featured guests Roxanne Gay and Mae Martin . Currently, Welch is honing her stand-up skills and touring with Brett Goldstein as his opener.

Dad Jokes is a hilariously vulnerable docu-special that takes you along for the ride. On the incredibly intimate road trip, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll feel everything in between as Welch searches for her dad in an effortlessly funny testament to having an absent father.
