Stand-up comedian Urzila Carlson has been taking over the international stage for years now & is back with her newest comedy special, It’s Personal.
This new hour follows her previous special Overqualified Loser released in 2020 on Netflix where she indeed proved herself overqualified. Carlson has earned many awards for her comedy including: the People’s Choice Award in 2014 and 2015 at New Zealand International Comedy Festival, Director’s Choice Award at the 2017 Sydney Comedy Festival, the 2019 Rielly Comedy Award by the Variety Artists Club of NZ, and she was the six time winner of Best Female Comedian at the New Zealand Comedy Guild Awards. On top of this, Carlson, a South African native, was named the 2019 Australasian Ambassador of South African Tourism for both Australia and New Zealand.
In 2019, Carlson earned the title of the highest-selling comedian in the 33-year history of The Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Later she would go on to earn the festival’s prestigious People's Choice Award three years consecutively. After becoming a best-selling comedian, Carlson also became a best-selling author when she re-released her 2016 autobiography Rolling With the Punchlines.
The South African comedian is known for her hilarious deadpan delivery and cheeky wit which has earned her many high-profile television roles. Carlson is a beloved series regular on both Australia’s and New Zealand’s version of the award-winning comedy panel show Have You Been Paying Attention? and New Zealand’s version of the hit Australian show, Taskmaster.
Carlson has also appeared on The Masked Singer on Network 10 in 2020. That same year Overqualified Loser was first released. Shortly after in 2021, Carlson released her award-winning podcast That’s Enough Already! which now sits atop the Comedy charts.
While Overqualified Loser is her debut Netflix special it is not her debut on Netflix. Carlson first appeared in the world-wide comedy series, Comedians Around the World which was filmed at Just For Laughs in Montreal in 2022. First she took Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Europe by storm, selling out crowds on tour where she filmed It’s Personal at Brisbane Powerhouse.
Carlson has recently earned roles in feature films She voices Honkus in the animated film Ozi which boasts a star-studded cast, including Donald Sutherland, Laura Dern, Ru Paul, and Amandla Stenberg. Carlson will make her third Netflix appearance in the Adam Sandler & Happy Madison produced rom-com Kinda Pregnant alongside Amy Schumer.
Carlson is now going back to her roots, touring her new show, Just Jokes, to sold out audiences not only in Australia and New Zealand but also the UK and US.
