Next week, Matt Rife will release his next comedy special, Lucid: A Crowd Work Special, the first of its kind to premiere on Netflix. Ahead of its premiere, the Natural Selection comedian released a funny new promo flexing his sketch comedy chops with the help of his “biggest supporters.”
In the new promo, Rob Riggle, who plays Matt Rife’s representation, is trying to come up with the concept for Rife’s next special with the help of a focus group. The group consists of three characters: one with a mustache and suspenders, another with bright blue hair and a big “BLM” tattoo on their neck, and a larger bald man all played by Matt Rife. The focus group does not hold back from asking all the questions the public has been asking about Matt Rife including, “Wasn’t he canceled?” Riggle addresses all the rumors and debunks each one. The blue haired participant asks why there aren’t any Black people in the meeting and Riggle sort of breaks the fourth wall saying, “You can’t play that character. That’s how you actually get canceled.” Out of nowhere a mysterious janitor appears and suggests Rife make a special that will please everyone, a crowd work special.
And so the idea came to fruition. Netflix’s first crowd work special and Matt Rife’s fifth comedy special Lucid premieres August 13th on Netflix.
