Earlier this morning, the Recording Academy unveiled its annual GRAMMY-Award nominations, celebrating Music's Biggest Night. While nearly all of the nominees celebrate this year's biggest musical achievements, there are a few categories that celebrate the more niche audio achievements including the Best Comedy Album category.
The primarily sole comedy category at the music dominated award show celebrates the best "artistic achievements in comedy" and also "recognizes excellence in comedy recordings, including spoken word, stand-up comedy and musical/novelty recordings."
Here's a round-up & a closer look at this year's 2025 nominations for the Best Comedy Album category: featuring comedy legends Trevor Noah, Dave Chappelle, Nikki Glaser, Jim Gaffigan & Ricky Gervais.
Trevor Noah: Where Was I
In Trevor Noah's return to Netflix for his fourth original comedy special Where Was I, the South-African comic "shares his hilarious experiences from his recent travels around the world, ranging from foreign national anthems to varying cultural norms."
Noah is a now three time Grammy Award nominated comedian who returns this year after being nominated last year for his Netflix special I Wish You Would & in 2020 for his Netflix special Son of Patricia. Where Was I was also nominated for a Golden Globe last year & an Emmy Award this year for Best Comedy Special & Outstanding Variety Special respectively.
Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer
Dave Chappelle returned late last year on New Year's Eve with his latest stand-up special, The Dreamer, on Netflix. And in it, "from his onstage tackle to the slap heard round the world, Chappelle lets loose in this freewheeling and unfiltered stand-up comedy special."
Chappelle is a five time Grammy-award winner of the Best Comedy Album category with previous wins including last year's What's In A Name (2022), The Closer (2021), Sticks & Stones (2019), Equanimity & The Bird Revelation (2018), & The Age of Spin & Deep in the Heart of Texas (2017).
Nikki Glaser: Someday You'll Die
Nikki Glaser continues to have a monumental year in comedy in 2024 following her knockout performance at this year's Roast of Tom Brady on Netflix & the release of her latest HBO comedy special, Someday You'll Die. And in it, she dives "into a wide range of topics including why she doesn’t want kids, the harsh realities of aging, her sexual fantasies, and plans for her own death – all in her hilarious, unapologetic, and brutally honest style."
Someday You'll Die marks the first ever Grammy Nomination for Glaser, which follows the critical success of her special following its Emmy nomination for Outstanding Variety Special. She'll also be making her hosting debut at the Golden Globes this January.
The album from the special is available now to download on 800 Pound Gorilla - check it out here!
Jim Gaffigan: The Prisoner
Jim Gaffigan released his comedy album The Prisoner earlier this year, which is not associated or accompanying a comedy special released this year. The album is presented as "an old school album only release featuring material all new and never released (with one fun exception)."
The Prisoner marks Gaffigan's eighth Grammy nomination following Comedy Monster (2021), The Pale Tourist (2020), Quality Time (2019), Noble Ape (2018), Cinco (2011), Obsessed (2014), & Mr. Universe (2011). With this nomination, Gaffigan continues to have an impressive year in comedy after launching his own bourbon Fathertime, starring in Unfrosted on Netflix, playing MN governor Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live this season, and next he'll premiere his next comedy special & the first ever Hulu original special The Skinny on November 22nd.
Ricky Gervais: Armageddon
Last year on Christmas Day, Ricky Gervais returned with his newest stand-up special Armageddon on Netflix. And in this special, Gervais “takes the stage for a provocative new stand-up special, riffing on the end of humanity, political correctness, family weddings, funerals and Artificial Intelligence.”
Armageddon marks Gervais' first ever Grammy nomination & it follows its placement as one of Netflix's most popular stand-up specials this year. He's currently out touring his newest show Mortality which will premiere on Netflix at a later date.
