If there's something to be said about what podcasting provides between a host & their guest for the listener is a closer look at a connection growing deeper. When speaking especially for comedy podcasts, this couldn't be even more true when you get to see those connections become hilarious friendships to witness & enjoy from afar.

That's exactly what each of these five podcast episodes have in common in this week's Hot Off The Mic recap, even for Conan O'Brien & his guest Alex Edelman despite feeling "apprehensive" about being Conan's friend. Here are five standout appearances from the comedy podcasting space this past week we recommend putting in your queue for the long weekend or your next commute!

5) Sarah Silverman made her senses work overtime alongside David Cross

Mr. Show collaborators & friends Sarah Silverman & David Cross got together this week on Senses Working Overtime for a hard hitting discussion on sh*tting your pants, peeing sitting down, and more. Before guesting opposite the fellow comic, Sarah has been making waves this year from announcing her newest show Postmortem kicking off later this Fall, to guesting at Jon Stewart's star-studded Netflix Is A Joke Fest show, & launching her new David Letterman revived game show Stupid Pet Tricks.

4) Mikey Day went on a comedy storm & made it weird with Pete Holmes

Saturday Night Live veteran & Unfrosted star Mikey Day stopped by You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes for a lengthy yet comically riff charged episode following their memorable appearance together on the Netflix game show Is It Cake?. In this conversation, the two comedy experts unpack Mikey's wildly popular Beavis & Butthead sketch from this past season of SNL, their fond for '90s snack commercials, Pete's infatuation with the name Cobie Smolders (believing this is not a real name) and soon finding these guys reenacting a bit where Pete pretends he's someone named Cobie Smolders not related to the actress & Mikey plays a hotel concierge checking him in. You'll quickly see how these two hilarious comics click so well with each other and by the end of this episode quickly become best friends.

3) Chad Daniels brings the dark humor heat on Whitney Cummings' Good For You

Chad Daniels continues his run of promo for his latest special, Empty Nester, on Netflix with a visit to the Good For You Podcast to talk shop with fellow comic Whitney Cummings. In this episode, Chad talks about that time he was fistfighting Gallagher, taking on religion in comedy, and life at his remote lake house. These two tight & talented comics go back & forth creating such a funny atmosphere while talking about things as silly as best hygiene practices and making a clever case as to why Winnie the Pooh needs to leave schools & is a creepy book.

Be sure to check out both Whitney Cummings' I'm Your Girlfriend & Chad Daniels' Dad Chaniels, Footprints on the Moon & Twelfth Night on 800 Pound Gorilla!

2) Snack Shack stars Gabriel Labelle & Conor Sherry swung by Bertcast

Gabriel Labelle & Conor Sherry, who if you may not know of yet, co-star together in the new indie coming-of-age comedy Snack Shack that released digitally earlier this year and is such a funny movie. So when we heard they made an appearance on Bert Kreischer's Bertcast, we couldn't have been more excited to check out this conversation. An overall entertaining episode featuring the two young stars and and we couldn't recommend listening to enough. In it, they of course talk about their new movie Snack Shack, being young in today’s Hollywood, The SNL movie Saturday Night (which Gabriel stars in and plays Lorne Michaels), and so much more!

1) Alex Edelman & Conan get real about their heroes on Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend

Comedian Alex Edelman has been having an exceptional 2024 with the release of his Emmy-Award nominated HBO special, Just For Us (which 800 Pound Gorilla News calls one of the best comedy specials of the year so far), and also becoming one of two comedy names to be recognized on this year's Time100 List alongside Maya Rudolph. In this engaging and rich conversation on Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend, Alex sat down with Conan O'Brien to chat about local stories from their shared hometown of Brookline, MA, performing his one-man show Just For Us in the wake of the passing of longtime friend, collaborator, and director Adam Brace, and focusing in on the need for empathy in comedy.

These two comedy heavyweights dig deep into building a proper hour of stand-up & one of the best moments to take away from this episode was what Conan said about how comics have been riffing off of each other for centuries (even dating back to the Civil War). In response to Alex talking about how he's been riffing off of Conan, Brian Regan & Gary Gulman to name a few, Conan said the most powerful statement about riffing on the comics before you & building your own act: "it's our failure to become our idols that makes us become our own thing."
