While the Oscars are still a long ways away until 2025, the Academy for Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is already on the hunt for its next host for the Oscars. If you loved Jimmy Kimmel's recent hosting stint earlier this year or even John Mulaney's widely discussed & favored Governor's Awards hosting gig as well as his Field of Dreams monologue at this year's primetime ceremony, don't expect to see them in the hosting slot at next year's Academy Awards in 2025.
It was just revealed that comedians & seasoned late night hosts Jimmy Kimmel & John Mulaney have both turned down the opportunity to host the 2025 Academy Awards.
Why Jimmy Kimmel & John Mulaney reportedly turned down the Oscar's hosting gig.
As far as we know about Kimmel, he turned down the gig earlier this summer but no specific reason was given according to Puck. He also previously teased an upcoming end to his talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, saying, “I think this is my final contract. I hate to even say it, because everyone’s laughing at me now — each time I think that, and then it turns out to be not the case. I still have a little more than two years left on my contract, and that seems pretty good. That seems like enough.”
So if that's any inclination on where Kimmel is at, he might be implying wanting to take a step back at greater hosting duties beyond his Emmy award winning late night show.
Kimmel is a four time Oscar host and is currently tied for the fourth most hosting duties with Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Lemmon. He sits behind Johnny Carson (5), Billy Crystal (9) and Bob Hope (19).
According to Puck who was first to report the news, “Mulaney is already committed to several projects in the winter and spring, and Netflix will probably pick up more of his Everybody’s in LA talk show, so he passed due to schedule.” At least this implies we may get to see more of Mulaney's Everybody's In LA in the near future pending a second season renewal.
Luckily for the Academy, they still have plenty of time to secure a host before its Sunday, March 2nd airtime on ABC. Maybe we can see Jiminy Glick make his hosting debut next year (only one can hope)!
